The Eye of the World ist das erste Buch der Das Rad der Zeit-Fantasy Serie, die von dem amerikanischen Autoren Robert Jordan geschrieben wurde. Es wurde am 15. Januar 1990 veröffentlicht. Bei seiner ersten Veröffentlichung bestand das Buch aus einem Prolog und 53 Kapiteln.

Am 2. Januar 2002 wurde The Eye of the World als zwei separate Bücher für den Jugendliteraturhandel neu veröffnet, mit größerem Text und mehreren Illustrationen. Das waren From the Two Rivers und To the Blight. Das erstere enthielt einen zusätzlichen Prolog namens "Vorgeschichte: Raben", der sich um die neunjährige Egwene al'Vere dreht.

Die Handlung besteht aus den beiden Büchern Drohende Schatten und Das Auge der Welt, und wurde auch als Gesamtband unter dem Titel Die Suche nach dem Auge der Welt in Deutschland veröffentlicht.
